What I use
Inspired by others who maintain a semi current list of tech stuff they use I’ll try to maintain this page with some stuff I use.
Computers: As far as my computer usage goes – I have a Dell Latitude D620 since 2006 – one of the first Dell notebooks to get dual-core processors. The preinstalled OS has been upgraded to Vista Home premium as I think Vista is better the XP I recently bought a new MacBook Pro 2.4 Ghz with 4 Gigs of Ram and it is a charm. Also for work I use an early dual-core IBM ThinkPad T60 which serves me quite well. Other then these notebook computers I have 2 custom built desktops – both of which mainly run XP pro but one dual-boots to Ubuntu Linux. These serve as application servers/data storage/playground.
Software: My primary tool at home and at work is of course the browser. I have used Firefox since it existed and have recently upgraded to Firefox 3.0 after running the beta releases and the release candidates. I run all other browsers (Safari, Chrome, IE7, IE8 beta, Opera,…) since I work on web applications for a living. I use Office 2007 at home for my limited needs and am starting to slowly migrate to Google Docs as it seems to be a sufficient replacement for my work. At work I use Office 2003 which also suits my purpose – corporate needs FTW!
Services: I manage my multiple private mail accounts from within Gmail and use it as my main email client as well. At work we of course use Outlook but you can already feel how outdated and slow Outlook feels after you get used to Gmail. Google calendar also supplies me with calendaring functionality and I use it to share my calendars with my girl friend which works great.
